
Why Keys Snap Inside Door Knob Locks and Mortise Lock Cylinders
Keys break inside locks for several predictable reasons, and understanding them helps you avoid a repeat incident. Metal fatigue is the most common culprit — a key that has been bent slightly from being dropped, sat on, or kept in a tight pocket eventually develops a stress fracture near the bow or at the shoulder. When torque is applied during a stubborn turn, that weakened point snaps. Worn lock cylinders are another major contributor; when the internal pins are dirty, corroded, or misaligned, turning the key requires extra force and puts extreme stress on the blade. This is especially common in older mortise lock hardware found in Laguna Niguel's executive office parks and multi-tenant commercial buildings, where the lock may not have been serviced in years. Cheap key duplicates cut from soft metal alloys are also notorious for snapping without warning.
The depth at which the key fragment sits inside the cylinder determines how complicated the extraction will be. A fragment that broke cleanly near the keyway opening is relatively accessible. One that snapped deep inside — past the first set of pins — requires specialized hook picks, extractor tools, and sometimes partial disassembly of the lock face to reach it without driving it further in. This is exactly why a trained professional with the right toolkit produces a far better outcome than any improvised household attempt.
